An SEO ranking checker helps you monitor where your pages appear for target searches. For your own site, Google Search Console is a useful starting point: it shows query impressions, clicks, and average position, with filters for page, country, device, and date.
Quick answer: In Search Console, open Performance → Search results, select the average-position metric, and review Queries or Pages. Add a country or page filter when you need a focused view. Treat average position as a trend, because a search result can appear in different places for different people, locations, devices, and result layouts.
Check keyword rankings in Google Search Console
- Choose the right property. Open the verified domain or URL-prefix property that includes the page you want to review.
- Open Performance. Select Search results and set a date range long enough to compare meaningful periods. Enable clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position.
- Find the query or page. Use the Queries tab to see searches that showed your site. Select a query and open Pages to see which URLs appeared, or filter by a page to inspect its query set.
- Check the country and device. Use the Countries and Devices tabs to see how performance differs by market or device. This gives a more grounded comparison than checking one manual search from your own browser.
- Compare similar periods. Compare like-for-like dates and look at clicks and impressions with position. A position change with no meaningful impression or click trend may not need immediate action.
Google describes Search Console's average position as an average of the topmost position occupied by your site's result across impressions. The value can differ from what you see in one manual search. Read Google's Performance report overview and its explanation of impressions, position, and clicks before interpreting a sudden movement.
When to use a third-party rank tracker
A rank-tracking service can be useful when you need scheduled checks for a larger keyword set, chosen locations, or competitor comparisons. Before comparing reports, keep the search engine, country or city, device, language, keyword, and collection date consistent. Different tools sample search results in different ways, so two providers may report different positions for the same phrase.
For a US, UK, Canadian, or Australian audience, review each country separately in Search Console or configure the tracker for that country. Avoid assuming that a single result from your own location represents every searcher in those markets.
PageRank is not the same as a keyword position
Some searches use “Google PageRank” to mean a page's position for a keyword. These are different ideas. PageRank is one of Google's link-analysis systems; a keyword position is where a result appears for a particular search. The old public Toolbar PageRank display was discontinued, and no public checker can show Google's complete internal PageRank value.
If you want to check a web page's rank, choose a keyword and measure the page's Search Console impressions, clicks, and average position, or use a third-party tracker with a defined location and device. Do not treat a vendor's authority score as a Google keyword ranking.
What to check when a page moves
First confirm that the comparison uses the same dates, query, country, and page. Then check whether impressions or clicks changed along with position. Review seasonality, competing pages on your own site, and changes to the search results before rewriting content.
If a page lost visibility, make sure it still returns a successful status, is indexable, and has the intended canonical URL. Check that internal links still point to it and that the page answers the searcher's question. The SEO Wins free page audit can help review on-page and technical signals, while the Bulk URL Checker can check a set of important page URLs. These tools diagnose pages; they do not track Google rankings.

Frequently asked questions
Can I check my Google ranking for free?
Yes. Search Console is free for verified site owners and reports performance for searches where your property appeared. It reports average position, not a guaranteed live rank for every person and search.
Why is my position different when I search manually?
Search results vary with location, device, time, and other search context. Search Console also averages position across impressions, so its metric will not match every individual search.
Does SEO Wins include a ranking checker?
No. SEO Wins provides page audits, a broken-link checker, and a bulk URL checker. Use Search Console or a dedicated rank-tracking service to monitor keyword positions.
