A useful free AEO tool stack does not need to imitate an expensive rank tracker. Combine page checks, official search reports and a small repeatable prompt sample. Pick each tool for the question it can actually answer.
Before comparing tools: decide whether you need to inspect a page, see platform-reported visibility, track a manual sample, or plan an edit. No single free tool observes every AI answer or predicts whether your page will be cited.
Free AEO and AI search tools by task
| Tool | Best for | What it can tell you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEOWins Site Audit | Checking one public page | Observable title, headings, links, schema, crawl and page-source issues worth reviewing. | Whether an AI platform will cite the page or how often the site appears. |
| SEOWins Robots.txt Tester | Reviewing crawler rules | How a robots.txt rule applies to a submitted URL and user agent. | Whether a platform will index, rank or cite a page after it can crawl it. |
| Google Search Console | Google Search performance | Its Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, date, country and device dimensions. | A complete list of prompts or an overall share of AI answers. The report may not appear if the site has too few impressions. |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Bing and supported Copilot experiences | Citations, cited pages, trends and sampled grounding queries as defined by Bing. | A universal ranking or every query that caused a citation. |
| SEOWins AI Search Insights | Reviewing exported Google and Bing reports | Source-separated summaries, date trends and shared-word topic groups from CSV files you provide. | Direct account connections, missing platform data, or proof that a suggested topic is an opportunity. |
| SEOWins AI Citation Tracker | Keeping a small manual sample | Your own recorded prompts, outcomes, cited URLs and monthly counts by platform. | Automated checks, a representative market-wide sample or an AI rank position. |
| Google Rich Results Test | Checking eligible structured data | Whether supported markup can be parsed and may be eligible for a Google rich result. | A special AEO schema type or a promise of AI citations. |
Start with the data sources you control
Verify your site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Use Google's AI report when it has enough data for the property; Google says the report may be unavailable when the site has not received sufficient impressions. Bing's grounding queries are described as a sample, so do not treat them as a complete prompt list.
For page-level issues, run an audit and inspect the rendered or source content. If the page is inaccessible, unclear or unsupported by evidence, fix that first. Structured data can describe visible content and help with supported search features, but Google's guidance does not require special AI schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
A starter workflow for a small site
- Choose one service or article page that matters to your visitors.
- Check crawl access, page content, titles, links and visible structured data with a page audit.
- Review Search Console and Bing reports if data is available. Keep their metrics in separate columns.
- Write a short list of real questions customers ask. Run the same prompts on the platforms you want to understand and log the conditions and answer links.
- Use the evidence to improve one page. Recheck the same URLs and prompts later rather than creating many pages at once.
SEOWins' report importer and citation log are browser tools: imported CSV rows and manual observations stay on the device, with a CSV export for keeping a copy. If you need team access, frequent automated checks, larger prompt sets or competitor reporting, compare paid products by their data sources, engine coverage, export options and methodology before subscribing.
How to compare AEO tools fairly
- Ask which platforms and surfaces are actually included in the plan you would use.
- Check whether the metric is an impression, citation, mention, generated score or referral visit.
- Find out whether answers come from live search, a model API, training data or manual input.
- Check the prompt sampling method, update frequency, export options and data retention.
- Prefer tools that show evidence and limitations over a single unexplained “AI visibility score.”
Frequently asked questions
Can a free AEO tool tell me my position in ChatGPT?
There is no stable, universal ChatGPT position comparable to a conventional search result. A tool may report its own sample or score, but the answer can vary with the prompt, account, location, settings and time.
Does a new Search Console property need time before AI data appears?
Yes. Google's report may not appear until the site has enough impressions in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Keep checking technical eligibility while the property gathers data.
Should I buy a paid tool right away?
First define the reporting decision you need to make. A paid tracker is more useful when you have a repeatable prompt set, regular reporting needs, and a clear reason to automate checks across multiple sites or platforms.
